Information for patients

Family Health

Many people are worried about attending the Psychosexual Clinic, usually because they don’t know what to expect. This information explains what happens when you have been referred to this service.

What is the Psychosexual Clinic?

The Psychosexual Clinic is provided by the Family Health division and offers assessment and treatment to people, either on their own or as a couple with sexual difficulties.

All our therapy staff work to the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists and the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy Codes of Ethics & Practice.

These codes of Ethics and Practice are available for you to read in the clinic waiting room.

What happens when I am referred to the Psychosexual Clinic?

Receiving your referral

When we receive a referral from your GP, or other healthcare professional, we will invite you to get in touch to book an appointment to attend an assessment.

Your assessment appointment

Your will be asked to attend the Moorgate Wing, E Level at Rotherham Hospital. Please book in at reception when you arrive.

Your assessment

Your assessment will take around 45 minutes, and will be done in a private room. You will be given the opportunity to tell us about any problems you are having, any background issues, and your general health. The language used is sexual in nature and will ask you about detailed personal information.

If the discussion upsets you in any way, your therapist will be there to support you in this.

If you are attending as a couple, the assessment will be done with you both in the room.

At the end of the assessment, the therapist will discuss options for therapy and/or treatment with you. It will be up you to choose if you would like to proceed with therapy or treatment. The therapist can advise you on this. The therapist will then write to the person that referred you to let them know what you have chosen to do.

Sexual and relationship therapy is offered to people either on their own or as a couple, who may be having difficulties in their relationship. None of your personal information is shared outside of this clinic other than feedback to your referrer, but this will always be discussed with you first. We meet data protection laws and follow our Trust policy. We would only release more information if you told us something that made us think that you or others were in danger.

Supervision of the therapists

To provide you with the most skilled help, your therapists have regular supervision of their practice. This means that another therapist can give a second opinion to your therapist if needed. This checks that we are offering you a high level of safety and quality of care.

We want you to feel comfortable about starting your therapy. If you have any worries, please let us know.

If you have any concerns about this service, we hope that you will feel comfortable to discuss them with your therapist, however, you are also able to contact the Patient Experience Team
